Excited to share a coupe of my signature workshops this May in New Jersey- Hybrid In person and online- hope to see you there...
I will have a bit
Cairo Shaabi Workshop (hybrid)
12 - 2pm EST
Shaabi is not a static dance style, nor a repertoire of steps. Shaabi is the pulse of the current culture, always shifting and changing... of the people, by the people--fluid, evolving, growing, and breathing.
In this workshop you will learn:
Current shaabi music study & subculture exploration
Painting a picture: creating context
Characters of Cairo
Real world applications
30-Min break
Saidi & Tahtib Workshop (hybrid)
2:30 - 4:30pm EST
Tahtib is a powerful movement form that can be traced as far back as ancient pharaonic times as a martial art! It has since been woven into Egyptian folklore culture and recognized by UNESCO as a "Heritage Dance" coming specifically from Upper Egypt.
In this workshop we will explore raqs assaya (stick dance) from past to present. You will learn:
Tahtib posture, form, attacks, and blocks
Heavy/masculine Saidi musicality, with classic combos and tableau
Movement combos/style from Fanoon shaabeya of Luxor, Egypt
Progression into modern raqs assaya (cane dance)
Application of character work with the stick
Note: you will need a stick or cane for this class. If you don't have your own, let us know so we can bring you an extra one.
*A recording will be available for 30 days after the workshop
