Transcendental Whirling
The Practice of Conscious Turning
Whirling is one of the most ancient human movement impulses — turning around a central axis.
Long before it was ritualized, turning was a way to shift perception, alter awareness, and reorganize the body’s relationship to gravity.
My approach to whirling is not religious.
It is embodied, technical, and experiential.
For over 16 years, I have taught whirling as a method of nervous system training, spatial intelligence, and energetic integration. What appears simple — spinning — is in fact a sophisticated dialogue between balance, breath, fascia, and focus.
Whirling reveals where you brace.
It reveals how you regulate.
It reveals how you return to center.
Whirling Magic Masterclass
Egyptian Tanoura-Inspired Turning Technique & Transcendental Movement
Rooted in the rich tradition of Egyptian Tanoura folklore and reimagined through a contemporary movement lens, this master class explores whirling as both a technical discipline and an embodied meditative art.
This workshop is intentionally offered outside of religious practice and clearly differentiates itself from Sufi devotional ceremony or Mevlevi whirling traditions associated with Rumi. While honoring the cultural and historical roots of rotational practices across the Middle East and beyond, this class approaches whirling through movement education, nervous system awareness, embodiment, and personal experience rather than spiritual doctrine.
Far beyond simply spinning, whirling is the practice of organizing the body along its vertical axis — discovering balance, expansion, breath, and presence through sustained rotational movement. In many traditional cultures, turning has long been used as a pathway into rhythm, concentration, joy, and transcendence. In this workshop, we approach the turn through both technical understanding and lived physical experience.
Students will learn foundational whirling mechanics including body stacking, spotting alternatives, weight transfer, vestibular conditioning, breath coordination, and the relationship between the spine and rotational flow. Through guided exercises and progressive turning drills, participants will discover how greater external movement can create profound internal stillness.
This workshop blends folkloric inspiration, movement science, nervous system awareness, and expressive exploration, offering dancers a new relationship to balance, musicality, presence, and flow state.
Weighted whirling skirts from Egypt will be provided for exploration during the workshop.
With over 15 years of international experience teaching movement, yoga, and performance, I bring a grounded and accessible approach to whirling. My work bridges the mechanics of the practice (how to turn safely and sustainably) with its deeper dimensions—from meditation to performance.
Whirling, in my methodology, is a tool for embodiment — not performance alone, not ritual alone — but integration.
I am available internationally for studios, retreat centers, universities, and embodiment festivals.

“My first experience with whirling dance was in Italy, at a retreat. It was incredible! It was a completely new experience for me ,deeply moving and emotionally powerful. I discovered that this dance can be a ritual, bringing you closer to your Creator. As someone on a spiritual path, this experience was truly eye-opening! It helped me connect with my higher self and expand my awareness in ways I can’t fully put into words. Thank you, Nawal, for introducing me to whirling. Your passion and love for what you do inspired me deeply, and now I’m excited to dive even deeper into the world of whirling and the mysticism behind it!”
